Tribal violence in south Sudan troubling the UN

E-mail Print
South Sudan cannot afford another war yet in recent weeks, thousands of people have been killed at the hands of an increasingly violent clashes between rival tribes. The UN is worried that the recent violence maybe directly linked to the upcoming elections in early 2010. Rival tribes are trying to affect the outcome of these elections and they see violent means as the most effective tool which could ultimately see some tribes have a larger control over certain regions.

The Sudanese army is accused of not intervening and sometimes even siding with one group to punish others. Rival tribes remain heavily armed and the clashes since 2005 have seen hundreds of thousands of refugees internally displaced.
