Gabbra girl - Kenya |
Eric Lafforgue posted a photo:
The Gabbra live in the Chalbi desert of northern Kenya, between Lake Turkana , Moyale and Marsabit . The Gabbra are an Eastern Cushite people related to the Somali-Rendille
The Gabbra have become part of the Borana peoples in the last 200 years. The Borana herd cattle while the Gabbra are attached to camels. They are pastoralists.
The Gabbra make round houses of bent pole frames covered with skins and grass. The Gabbra follow the traditional religion and heritage of their ancestors. Gabbra religious beliefs are inseparably linked to their herds. The Muslim influence is stronger in some areas than others. They traditionally believe in one God, whom they call Waka.
The Gabbra have also come into contact with the gospel in towns, and some are now christians.
Gabbra wedding takes a long time, as families negociate for 2 or 3 years…when the kids are 10-12 years old!
